Electric Golf Buggy Battery Operation
Always wear the correct protective clothing when handling batteries.
Discharging batteries is entirely a function of your particular application. However, below is list of helpful items:
- Shallow discharges will result in a longer battery life.
- 50% (or less) discharges are recommended this means running your batteries until the indicator shows 50% or less not the actual battery discharge.
- 80% discharge is the maximum safe discharge.
- Do not fully discharge flooded batteries (80% or more). This will damage (or kill) the battery.
- Do not leave batteries deeply discharged for any length of time
- Batteries should be charged after each period of use and for a minimum of 8 hours.
- Batteries that charge up but cannot support a load are most likely bad and should be tested.
- Refer to the Testing section for proper procedure.
- Poor periodic maintenance can also contribute to battery discharge. Conditions such as poor battery cable contact due to improper torque can create high resistance connections that will increase amperage and reduce run times.
- Dirty and corroded terminals will lead to improper connections. Over and under watering will cause metallic component damage and electrolyte dilution or will sulphate the portion of the battery plate that is exposed to air.
- Additional accessories will also accelerate battery discharge as will use of GPS systems, radios, heaters and coolers. All which will shorten life and running time.
